How I Discovered WeCloudData

I did some research on data engineering schools in Canada and found WeCloudData. Additionally, I spoke with an alumnus, Stan Taov, a data engineer at Telus, who recommended the program.

The Decision to Choose WeCloudData

What made me opt for WeCloudData was the positive review ratings and recommendations from alumni. I spoke with several alumni who highly recommended the program, which played a pivotal role in my decision.

My Professional Background

Before enrolling in the Data Engineering program, I was working as an Analyst in the banking industry and previously held a position as a junior project coordinator.

Motivation Behind Data Engineering

I had some experience using Python and realized I wasn’t happy with my career as an Analyst in the finance industry. After doing some research, I was motivated to pivot into data engineering. I also took the IBM Data Analyst Certification and realized I did not want to become a Data Analyst. My background in Structural Engineering, which is very technical, aligned with my passion for solving complex and technical problems, steering me towards data engineering.

My Personal Journey

I spoke with many data engineers and received advice on how to become one. I watched numerous YouTube videos on the skills required and researched data engineering programs in Canada, leading me to WeCloudData. I enrolled in the postgraduate data engineering diploma at WeCloudData to have a structured approach to learning since I wasn’t making progress by self-studying. The WeCloudData client project gave me hands-on experience, allowing me to apply my skills and gain work experience. Post-program, I was paired with a mentor who helped me with resume preparation and interview strategies.

WeCloudData’s Program Highlights

I received immense support from Teaching Assistants and instructors, making the learning experience enjoyable. The projects were particularly engaging, solidifying my data engineering knowledge.

Support from Instructors and TAs

The TAs were incredibly helpful, always available to answer questions. Their knowledge and support were invaluable.

Online Learning Experience

WeCloudData’s online classes were far better than traditional in-person learning. The convenience of learning from home and the live classes were game changers compared to other self-guided bootcamps where I felt lost and unmotivated.

Advice for Success in Online Classes

Current students should practice diligently, tackle projects independently using available resources, and ask lots of questions. It’s important to revisit materials and understand them thoroughly rather than rushing through just to get the diploma.

Impact of Real Client Projects

The real client projects were instrumental in my job search process. They allowed me to demonstrate my skills and discuss real-world challenges during interviews. Employers care more about practical experience than personal projects.

Job Search Journey

It took me over a year (13 months) to secure a full-time data engineering position. I was selective with job applications, focusing only on full-time roles. Despite numerous interview opportunities, I waited for the right position.

Mentorship and Career Guidance

My mentor, Maddy, was essential in preparing my resume and conducting mock interviews. She provided resources to sharpen my coding skills and offered valuable advice on interviewing techniques.

Resume and Portfolio Strengths

Including real client projects on my resume significantly increased my interview opportunities. Personal projects showcased my skills, and optimizing my LinkedIn profile also played a key role. Practicing interview techniques, both technical and behavioral, was crucial.

Insights into Data Engineering Interviews

Data engineering interviews typically involve several stages:

  1. Phone screen interview
  2. Live coding or timed coding assessments (Python, SQL, sometimes Git/Bash)
  3. Technical interviews (data warehouse, Spark, data quality, SQL, Python, Cloud)
  4. Behavioral interviews with the Hiring Manager For FAANG companies, system design questions are common. Some interviews also included take-home assessments requiring the building of ETL pipelines.

WeCloudData Program Impact

The program’s quality, tools, and technologies taught were in high demand, which helped me significantly in the job market.

Advice for Aspiring Data Engineers

Data engineering requires continuous learning and tenacity. Students should engage in self-study, build personal projects, follow industry leaders, and network with professionals. Keeping personal notes and resources handy for reference is also beneficial.

Post-WeCloudData Career Growth

Graduating from WeCloudData and entering the industry has been transformative. All my hard work paid off, and I am grateful for the opportunity. Joining WeCloudData was the best decision, and the investment was worth it.
