Q: What was your career background before enrolling in our Data Science program? A: Vatsala holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, a Master’s in Electrical and Computer Engineering, and had six months of experience as a specialist prior to joining the program.

Q: What made you want to pursue a career in Data Science? A: Vatsala’s journey began during her undergraduate years when she received a scholarship for a work program in Canada, working on a machine learning project. This experience, coupled with subsequent internships and a master’s opportunity, fueled her interest in data science.

Q: Can you tell us a bit more about yourself and your journey to where you are today? A: After completing her Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering in India, Vatsala secured a scholarship from the Government of Canada for a work program. She later pursued a master’s degree with a thesis focused on optimization and deep learning. While working on her thesis, she explored Big Data technology and AWS. Joining WeCloudData seemed like a perfect opportunity to formalize her education and gain industry insights. Vatsala’s journey includes part-time and full-time roles, totaling 18 months, before landing her current position at Fairstone Bank.

Q: What did you find most enjoyable or interesting about the Data Science program at WeCloudData? A: Vatsala highlights the capstone projects and TA hours as the most enjoyable aspects. Capstone projects provided a broad view of different industries, enhancing her technical knowledge, while knowledgeable TAs shared valuable business insights relevant to the projects.

Q: How did the Instructors and Teaching Assistants (TAs) support you during the program? A: Vatsala commends Tianshu and Shahoua as outstanding instructors, emphasizing their clarity and the lasting impact of their teachings. Other instructors and TAs also went above and beyond to provide support.

Q: Based on your previous education experience, how did online classes compare to learning in person? A: While acknowledging the missed interaction factor, Vatsala finds online classes beneficial due to the comfort of learning from home and the availability of recorded lectures.

Q: Do you have any tips for current students on how to be successful in online classes? A: Vatsala advises students to work hard, conduct research, and grasp the basics before joining WeCloudData. Basic proficiency in Python and SQL is crucial. Attending classes with focus, asking pertinent questions, and planning projects in advance will maximize the learning experience.

Q: How do you feel the real client projects helped you when it came time to find a job? A: As a part-time program participant, Vatsala did not engage in real client projects. However, she believes that such projects are a key factor in landing jobs, offering practical industry experience.

Q: How long did it take you to find a job after graduating from WeCloudData? A: Vatsala applied for 150 jobs, participated in 5-6 interviews, and landed her job within a month of starting her job search.

Q: How did your mentor support you during the career mentorship? A: While Vatsala did not have a formal mentor, she received support from her instructors and the WeCloudData community. She emphasizes the importance of LinkedIn and GitHub profiles in the job search and networking with connections.

Q: What aspects of your resume and portfolio do you believe helped you secure a job so quickly? A: Vatsala attributes her degrees, projects, and work experience to her successful job search.

Q: Can you give us some insight into what the Data Science interview process is like? A: The interview process typically involves initial talks with HR, interviews with hiring managers and teams, and live coding sessions. Vatsala received her offer following these steps.
