What was your career background before enrolling in our Data Science program? With undergraduate and graduate degrees in electrical engineering specializing in control systems, my career background was rooted in engineering. What made you want to pursue a career in Data Analytics? The realization of the increasing role of data in research, coupled with the need to adapt my skill set, motivated me to pursue a career in data analytics.
Can you tell us a bit more about yourself and your journey to where you are today? Graduating with degrees in electrical engineering, I transitioned to data analytics during my graduate studies, leveraging my engineering background. I chose the BI/DA track and quickly acquired skills in SQL, Python, Power BI, and Tableau. Overcoming challenges in business knowledge, I mastered retail and finance analytics. Currently, I work as a data management analyst at the Government of Alberta.
What did you find most enjoyable or interesting about the Data Science program at WeCloudData? The most enjoyable aspect was the hands-on experience, especially in creating dashboards and gaining insights from various datasets. Overcoming challenges in business knowledge and mastering new concepts were also intriguing.
How did the Instructors and Teaching Assistants (TA’s) support you during the program? Instructors and TAs provided valuable support, clarifying concepts and guiding me through challenges. Their assistance played a crucial role in my learning journey.
Based on your previous education experience, how did online classes compare to learning in-person? While missing the in-person interaction, online classes offered the benefit of learning from the comfort of home and accessing recorded lectures, enhancing flexibility.
Do you have any tips for current students on how to be successful in online classes? Work consistently, conduct thorough research, and focus on fundamental skills before joining the program. Actively participate, ask relevant questions, and plan projects in advance.
How do you feel the real client projects helped you when it came time to find a job? While I did not engage in real client projects, I believe such experiences are invaluable for job seekers, providing practical industry exposure.
How long did it take you to find a job after graduating from WeCloudData? It took approximately 5 months, involving extensive job hunting, 500+ applications, and 10 interviews, highlighting the challenges of securing a position as a new grad.
How did your mentor support you during the career mentorship? While I did not have a formal mentor, my instructors and the WeCloudData community offered support. Emphasizing LinkedIn and GitHub profiles, networking, and showcasing industry knowledge proved beneficial.
What aspects of your resume and portfolio do you believe helped you secure a job so quickly? My diverse background in electrical engineering, mastery of analytics in retail and finance, and the ability to interpret government documents impressed the hiring manager and contributed to my swift job placement.
Can you give us some insight into what the Data Science interview process is like? The interview process typically involves HR interviews, meetings with hiring managers, and live coding sessions. Demonstrating knowledge and relating experience to the job requirements are crucial.
